Arnold Gilbey was born in Soham on 19th August 1880 (Newmarket Q2-1880 3B:560), baptised in Soham on 22nd September 1880, son of John and Susan GILBEY(née CLARK) of Angle Common, Soham.

1881 census...Aged 8 months (the family name recorded as Gilby) he was at Angle Common with his father John GILBY [54] farm labourer; his mother Susan [58] ; sisters Charlotte [18] farm labourer, Mary [14] farm labourer and Rose [10] and brother Harry [16] farm labourer. All were born in Soham.

1891 census...Aged 10, (family name still Gilby), he was at Clay Street, Soham with his parents(his mother's age now 54) and sister Rose (now aged 12).

1901 census...Aged 22 ( family name still Gilby), a farm labourer, he was at Clay Street with his parents (mother's age now 64).

1911 census...Aged 28 , (now Gilbey) a farm labourer, he was at Angle Common, Soham boarding with William and Elizabeth Marriott.
Ages seemed to be immaterial in this family. The pension card has his parents still in Clay Street.


Enlisted in Newmarket.
On the 25th March 1918m, the 4th day of the German Spring Offensive, the 12 Suffolks were in the area of Mory, dug in on the Erville-Mory road, holding up the German advance for at least 12 hours. Their casualties during March, mostly in the battle around Bapaume, were nearly 400.

19 died on the 25th March, none have an identified grave, all are named on the Arras memorial.
